Popular opinions are that all network marketing schemes are scams, or that Internet marketing will not work, because there are millions of websites. These are the popular misconceptions.

But first, let me tell you why these two misconceptions are good.

It does mean that less people will be motivated to be involved in these two businesses, which is important, because after all, we Internet marketers do not want saturation in the market! If everybody is selling, nobody will be buying.

Now, why are many people basically uneducated about these two subjects? It all comes down to a simple reason. Where do people get their news from? Correct, the newspapers, television news, and sometimes the Internet. These mediums have never publicised network marketing or affiliate/Internet marketing, all they talk about is traditional business models. They are more interested in what is happening in the Integrated Resorts applications, the war in Iraq, how to fight Aids, the overview of the stock market, and all that, the first of which has influenced people to believe that job in the service industry has a promising future, and the second of which is important, but really, not much people talk about it.

What else does the media report? All the bad news about pyramid schemes, fraud, laundering. You see these everyday on the front page. Do you ever see a success story of a network marketer in the news?

So the public remain to continue being uneducated. Which is good, in a way!

I began by studying their training. I purchased their courses and read their books. I also watched their videos and attended their webinars. What I learned friends is that they all harnessed the POWER of PERSEVERANCE.

They knew how NOT to quit, they just kept moving forward. They started just like I did with no knowledge of online MLM marketing and within a few short months were set free financially.

It takes incredible perseverance to survive in entrepreneurship, especially in the network marketing industry. The competition is tremendous and if you are not always on top of your game you will be left behind. The trick is to always be one step ahead “in value” of your downlines. For example, If I’m actively pursuing knowledge and strategies that will better my downlines, my team will always follow me. If I sit on my butt and let my team become more valuable than me then they will just look to the next leader. This is why training is so important in the online mlm industry. It’s all about creating massive value in the lives of others. Having the right knowledge and performing the right activities will do this for you.

Daegan Smith, Jonathan Budd, Mike Dillard, and Katie Freiling are all massively successful because they persevered until they became the leader who is worthy of being followed and mentored. They all studied and worked very hard building their MLM business. They sacrificed tons of hours to grow their businesses when their friends were at the beach or watching T.V.

Eventually, they surrounded themselves with a mastermind of partners who helped them even further. They learned how to make money as infopreneurs by creating their own courses and systems. Their couses and marketing systems have had a major impact on me as well as thousands of other entrepreneurs. Next, they learned the power of affiliate marketing and how to have thousands of affiliates promoting their products for them. Last but not least they learned the power of training and coaching and how to make massive money promoting their TIME coaching one on one.

Unfortunately there are several trainers out there on the internet that advocate abandoning the time proven strategies taught by MLM companies in favor of internet marketing strategies.

Typically, the trainer shares a story about how they struggled in MLM before learning these internet marketing techniques and then after applying these techniques, their income exploded. They also talk about how traditional MLM strategies didn’t work for them and this is why the student needs to use internet marketing.

Trainers that advocate this approach fail to understand the ultimate goal in MLM.

MLM is not about you being the best recruiter or the best person at signing up customers. MLM is about you doing a few basic simple concepts and you teaching your team how to do a few basic simple concepts until it duplicates down through your organization and the business begins to grow without your involvement.

The challenge is sticking around long enough until those people that are willing to do these few basic things are discovered and the organization is able to take off without your involvement.

The other challenge is that there is no way of knowing whether someone you recruit is going to be one of those people that are willing to do those few basic things. There is especially no way of knowing whether the person you recruit will eventually lead you to the person that is willing to do those few basic things.

As a result, when these trainers advocate only using internet marketing strategies, they in effect handicap a MLM distributor’s ability to find those key individuals faster by limiting that distributor to one source of prospecting, that being internet marketing. The fact of the matter is that some of the best distributors in your organization may very well be people that you already know, people that they know or people that you meet when going through your daily routine.

The other downside to advocating only internet marketing strategies is that you handicap the growth of your organization by making a very dangerous assumption. Just because a prospect comes from an online source does not mean that when the prospect becomes a distributor he or she will thrive using an internet marketing approach.

The prospect that you recruited may have a very strong warm market that he or she has great influence over and is highly respected in that warm market.

However, that prospect may only be barely competent in the internet, having the ability to navigate web sites and check email, but not much else. As a result, now instead of having a distributor that could be a six figure income organization for you, by requiring only internet marketing, that distributor now becomes another distributor that quits in 90 days.

Because of this, I NEVER advocate only using internet marketing strategies to build a MLM business.

The key to success is to be familiar with ALL strategies, YOU use the strategy that works best for YOU and you work with your team to help them discover the strategy that works best for them!

Some distributors in your organization will do very well with internet marketing strategies. Other distributors will be able to master the warm market and referral process. Other distributors will do well by calling business opportunity leads. Still other distributors will be a master of the conversation and can spark conversations with people throughout the course of their daily activity to build their business successfully.

Internet marketing does NOT replace traditional MLM strategies. It simply complements traditional MLM strategies. Know that and apply that, and you will be well on the road to building a long term successful business!

1. Lack of money

A lot of people just don’t have the money to market their business. The days of “Make a list and talk to your friends and family” are gone. Do you really think the big dogs on stage are still doing that? Absolutely not. They are investing every month in some form of marketing, and so should you. Luckily, you don’t need much money. With the emergence of the internet over a billion people become available to you through social sites, forums, groups and chat rooms.

If you learn the art of social marketing, along with sort of advertising that captures leads through pay-per-click, solo ads, article marketing, blogging etc, you should be able to capture a decent amount of leads with as little as $50 to $100 a month! You should also strongly consider a Funded Proposal, a method of marketing that creates income for you up-front, while producing all the leads you need.

2. Lack of Activity

I have to admit, I’m lazy by nature, and I know I’m not alone! Give me a choice between something I WANT to do and something I HAVE to do and well… you get the idea. To combat that I have disciplined myself through making network marketing into a game. I play the game 30 minutes a day, and get points for business building activity. This has worked well for me.

Other people find business partners who they are accountable to every day, and communicate by e-mail or phone at the end of every day, comparing results and sharing ideas. Another method that works well is a team call where people can dial into a conference line and discuss the days work with several others. Just figure out a system that works for you, and commit to a small amount of reasonable activity every day, then teach your team to do the same, and if you are consistent and persistent, your team will be as well, and you will create duplication.

I don’t know who said this, but it’s absolutely true: “If you want your team to go into momentum, YOU have to go into momentum.”

3. Lack of People to Talk To

The big question is: Who are you going to talk to today? There are three types of leads:

1. Warm Market. These are the people that already know you and (hopefully!) trust you.

2. Purchased leads.

3. Self Generated leads.

Now here’s a tip I learned from one of our guest trainers, Dale Calvert: It’s all about WARM MARKET. But wait! You say. Then why are you telling me about Purchased and Self Generated leads? Simple. Your job is to turn all your leads into warm market leads. Most people make the mistake of thinking of them as “leads” instead of as PEOPLE! If you stop recruiting and start building your warm market, you will take pressure off of yourself, off of them, and your whole network marketing business will grow more naturally and be more rewarding.

4. Lack of Skills and Knowledge

My friend Pat Berry of the MLM Radio Show talks about becoming a “Skillionaire.” I love the metaphor. I know a lot of network marketing millionaires, and every single one of them has a high skill set. They know the industry inside out, they have developed great people skills, they are master communicators, and great marketers. And all of those things can be learned. Don’t make the mistake of thinking they were born that way. All of these skills can be developed.

Here’s a simple way to increase your skills (Thanks to Jim Rohn for these ideas!)

1. Read at least 10 pages a day in a personal development book.

2. Listen for at least 20 minutes a day to a good audio.

3. Attend a live seminar at least quarterly.

Three habits that are easy to incorporate into your life, and easy to do.

So those are the four reasons people fail, and some ideas on how to overcome them in your own marketing. Apply some of these ideas consistently to ensure your success in your network marketing business.

If you were to place your sidebar on the left, Google will end up reading the same content, i.e. the sidebar, over and over again and we do not want Google to keep on reading duplicate content as this is not good.

Next, be prepared to submit between three to seven articles a week. These may be short articles ranging from between four to six hundred words so that people are able to get whatever information they require as fast and instantly as possible. By frequently updating your blog, this will enable Google to find it faster and keep you in their index. Once you are already in Google’s index, continue to write valuable and interesting posts and you will soon see an increase in your website traffic.

If you are not a good writer or have a fear of not knowing what to write, you can either do your research on the internet and get some ideas of the content for your blog. Or you can outsource your blog updates and pay someone else to get your articles ready. Another alternative is to make use of other media like podcast, video and pictures.

From my experience, do not think about the difficulties and keep telling yourself that you cannot do it. As Nike’s slogan goes, “Just Do It!” This should be your motto too. Start doing it and you will learn step-by-step!

3. The single most important aspect of growing a downline is becoming a leader. When marketing an MLM opportunity, you should worry about marketing yourself first. Everyone goes onto the internet to find a solution to a problem. If anyone is interested in starting an MLM business they are looking to make money, not sell a product.

If you had the option of choosing $500 or $500 worth of a product, what would you choose? I would choose the cash. So why is it that when people try and promote an opportunity they try to sell the product not the fact of helping them make money?

As you become a leader your credibility in the MLM world will also improve. More and more people will look to you and join your opportunity.

Your job is to help your downline make money that is the bottom line. When you become a leader and share your support, your marketing system, and your expertise then your MLM home based business downline will grow faster. 1. Get acquainted with the ins and outs of MLM. Visit MLM discussion forums, read what others are saying, what is making them money, what is not converting, what is identified as a scam, etc. Read articles and ebooks on MLM, understand the concepts of downlines and matrix; basically get the hang of the MLM business.

2. Next, make a list of prospective MLM companies you wish to join based on your research, their market standing, their ability to fulfill your goals, their supporting your country, their compensation plan, their bonus revenue pool, your interest in their products, your ability to market their products, etc.

3. Now is the time to select your upline. Choose a good leader carefully, one who is willing to work with you and support you till you can manage yourself. Will he help you in following up and converting leads? Will he actually call up your pre-enrollees and leads? When you’re first starting out, it pays to have someone who can support and motivate you.

4. You have to understand that you need to leverage at least one or more of three things to succeed in network marketing – your own time, money (to generate leads) and resources (hard work). This business works best when you have a team that cumulatively possesses all three of these. This means that you need to look out for leaders that fill up the area you lack in.

5. Your business will take time to reach the goals you’ve setup. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day; and neither will your MLM business. Have patience and give it at least three to four years to reap real results. Start doing it part time along with your day job or whatever other business you have and gradually build it up. Pace yourself for the long haul, don’t stress yourself out by overworking in a frenzy and affecting your health.

6. Maintain your client list and use the services of an optin email solution where you can update them with new offers as and when you come across them. 7. Its great to join new companies as you get in the ground floor and you increase the chances of building a greater downline. At the same time, its also a higher risk. Do some due diligence by asking folks in the trenches and also do some research on the internet. But since piling people is a race in this business, just signup and reserve your position before you do a detailed due diligence.

8. Always join companies that have some real rock solid products, keep away from the junk. This way, you don’t have to sell the sizzle (hype), just the steak. The key is to join the right program at the right time with the right people, continue to re-invest a part of your income in self improvement and other programs, and form co-ops with others.

9. Branding is a very important criteria in the MLM business. Maintain a habit of putting your name with every promotion you do. Once you’re known to promote only reputed and decent products, people will listen to you and also join every program that you promote. This is called “Branding Your Name And Breaking The Bank”!

10. Its 100 percent legal to form 2, 3 or more companies; signup from one company, put your second company below it, put your third company below the second, so on and so forth, depending upon the number of levels the MLM allows. Just ensure that you have separate tax IDs for each of them. This way, you just need to promote the bottom (last) account and you get paid on multiple levels! This is good if you plan to do business in a big way. While the initial cost of setting up companies is high, you can continue using them for each new MLM Company you join. Some MLM companies even offer you the opportunity to buy multiple positions when you first join them, which can even double your income.

If you’re like me, you’re sick of cold calling, prospecting, putting up signs in the community and altogether marketing to people who have no idea or even care about what you’re talking about.  If I haven’t mentioned this before, one of the most important rules of marketing is to offer your system, product or service to your “warm market,” i.e. those who know about and are looking for what you’re offering.

How do you do that nowadays, especially with your MLM?  How do you use MLM strategic internet marketing to grow your downline?

First, begin with getting the training you need or educate yourself on internet marketing.  There are hundreds of millions of people who use the internet every day, and there are always people looking for what you have to offer (that’s the most exciting thing about the internet, the massive potential).  You cannot and will not be successful with MLM strategic internet marketing unless you know what you’re doing.

Then, secondly, find someone you trust who is using the internet to grow their MLM business and begin to ask questions, find out if they’ve used a system that helped them build their MLM through strategic internet marketing, and do what they do.

Third, find a system that will automate the process for you.  Through the system my wife and I instituted, all of the hard work is automated, i.e. building a website, creating email autoresponders, setting up a back office with training and support, and helpful links and forums to help with other issues or hints to succeed.

For a successful MLM strategic internet marketing campaign, you have to begin to realize that leveraging the internet to build your business is the best way for you to build for the long run.

And fourth, you have to have a system that filters out those who are not interested.  For instance, with our MLM home page, you have to put in your name and email address to get the training in the system.   If you aren’t willing to put in a name and email address to get free resources to help you with your MLM, then I don’t want you in my system anyway.

I like that my system filters out what we like to call in the industry, “tire kickers,” or those who want something without having to do anything or give up anything.   Seriously, if you want to succeed in MLM, you have to do whatever it takes to ensure you are not one of the 97% who utterly fail at MLM, even if it means you have to give your email address to someone to gain info on building your business.

In conclusion, my goal is to lay a foundation for this idea of MLM strategic internet marketing.  Very few people understand or perceive the potential of the internet, but if you get the training you need and use the most effective system, you will begin to see people flocking to your business while you sleep, play with your kids, or while eating lunch (the internet works for 24 hours a day across the world, you cannot!).

And before I leave, let me give you some examples of how this has worked for my wife and I, we consistently get qualified leads into our system daily (qualified leads=people interested in our business system and want more information), we currently convert those leads at about a 15% rate (meaning about 15% of those leads actually buy something from us), and we use virtually free marketing tools on the internet to drive traffic to our sites.

Anyway, if you are sick of failing miserably at MLM because the tactics of your upline don’t work, maybe you should try leveraging the internet and use the same systems that the top MLM income earners in the industry use to create massive wealth for themselves every single month.

Internet marketing is much more suited to people with busy lives and work schedules and can give you the same kind of income as someone who is building a downline in a traditional mlm company. What I love about internet marketing is that there are no meetings, you don’t have to go around hounding people down about your business, you don’t have to bug family members and friends, you can easily automate most of your advertising processes, you have a much wider arena of people to promote your business to, and it can be very cheap! Also if you have a success system in place for bringing in and following up with your leads you really don’t have to spend very much time each week building your business.   

I have organized a series of automated advertising methods I use each week that work for me all of the time and I don’t have to spend really anymore than 2-5 hours a week marketing my business. All I do is pay for my ad and copy and paste, I write 30 fresh articles a month and submit them to a company called Isnare which they in turn submit my article to thousands of publishers and article directories who get me exposure all over the internet and listings in the search engines. I upload videos on YouTube, I use SiteSubmit Plus to get my leadpage even more exposure all through the search engines and 500,000 directories. To take it even further I use ezine ads and creditbased safelists which allow me to get my ad infront of thousands of network marketers at the click of a button, I use DoctorTraffic as an automated way to pull in leads from traffic exchanges.

All these are part of my success system! It’s hard to do these type of things in the offline world. I’m not saying it’s impossible but I bet your costs would be a heck of a lot higher. Just think of what it cost to do a couple thousand piece mailing to peoples homes to inform them about a business in order to generate leads for whatever you’re doing. I’m investigating a Reverse Mortgage business right now that cost about $900 to send to I believe about 5 to 10,000 peoples homes. Do you know how much internet advertising I could buy with $900 dollars? And I could hit way more than 10,000 people. These are the reasons why I love to do internet marketing versus offline marketing and traditional mlm. And this is also why I would advise new marketers to keep most of there network marketing business on the internet as opposed to doing it offline.

When you buy into a traditional multi-level marketing franchise it becomes somewhat of a shock for someone who has been used to being an employee of a company for so many years to find out that they are going to basically have to become a totally different person in order to achieve any great level of success with the opportunity. You’re probably trying to figure out what I mean by this statement! MLM traditionaly speaking is almost heavily grounded in sales.

You have to be able to physically go up and talk to people about becoming a distributor on your team. You have to commit yourself to making appointments with interested parties either in their home or bringing them to weekly company meetings where your guests are able to see a presentation of the plan presented to them usually by one of your upline sponsors who are successful at what they do. You have to constantly keep talking to people about becoming a distributor or buying xyz product.

For someone who is just used to working, going home everyday and staying in the same cycle, this is a very antagonizing adjustment! Most people traditionaly need to have a very big reason why they need to change who they are internaly and many individuals would rather stay the same even if presented with the opportunity to make some decent money if it involves a major change in who they are.

This is a big reason why alot of people will turn you down when you present an MLM franchise to them. Deep inside they know that there really is some money in the opportunity you are speaking of, but the change of self is just too much of an adjustment for them. Online network marketing on the other hand offers you the same amount of pay, but at the same time allows you to stay somewhat within your comfort zone while you are trying to learn.

This allows you to slowly change who you are instead of having to start immediately changing over night. From the things that I have pointed out in this article you should now have a good idea what are the advantages of marketing on the internet when compared to the traditional mlm model.

You may be thinking at this point, only four secrets to making millions and millions of dollars? Let’s hear it then. Actually, there is really only one. Time and time again, success story after success story; all have this one truth in common. So, this particular gem I’ll save for last.

If network marketing is all about networking and of course marketing, why do so many network marketers continue to struggle to realize the infinite networking and lead generating potential of the internet? Simply put, it’s being done all wrong. How’s that?

Network marketing (also known as “Multi-Level-Marketing” or MLM) depends most heavily on…

- recruiting / lead generation / relationship-building

- sales conversion

- ongoing consumption

- replicating yourself through down line motivation and training

If your network marketing business fails to recognize the importance and any one of these fundamental elements then quite simply, you won’t have much of a business at all.

Everything starts with recruiting and lead generation. No leads means no sales. No sales means no down line. No down line means… I’m sure you get the idea here. The entire process is built upon the foundation of recruiting and relationship-building with the express intent of maximizing product consumption and the success of your down line. Your bottom line is this. If you can’t replicate your success within your down line you ultimately fail to realize the true income generating potential of network marketing.

That being said, I’ll take this opportunity to summarize my own cautionary tale for those who are new to network marketing or who are just now thinking of taking the plunge. For those who have been around the block a time or two please bear with me. Much of my story may undoubtedly sound very much like your own.

When I first made the decision to start my network marketing business, I believed that with a great product and an effective marketing system, enough hard work would guarantee me success. I had the right attitude, but the wrong impression of what made this business tick. I expected to have a great deal to learn and I was eager to do so. I attended trainings, bought books, studied sales copy, purchased leads, ran ad campaigns, the whole routine.

I managed to generate a fair number of leads, and only a few conversions. For me that was fine. I assumed that if x amount of traffic equaled y amount of conversions, all I needed to do was… You guessed it, drive more traffic. So, here I am grinding like a mad man at driving traffic, and losing all but my shirt in the process. That’s when it dawned on me. Sure things are a bit slow going, but if my real return on my investment comes with creating a successful down line… How many members of my down line can I honestly say would be willing to put in this much time, effort, and yes money, for the same results. Not a single one…

I’ll say this once more just to be absolutely clear. If you can’t easily and effectively replicate a reasonable measure of success in your network marketing down line, then you are in effect spinning your wheels without going much of anywhere. If you assume that replicated content and replicated sites are the same thing as replicated success, you may want to think again.

Think of your business like a car and the content you provide your potential prospects as the wheels. If you expect to move your business you need the content you provide about your business to stand out. You need wheels that give your business traction. That traction comes in the form of having a unique voice and providing your prospects unique content about your business.

Well that about says it… Once you do your pre-selling and your marketing to generate your leads make sure you can provide good quality content to convert those leads into sales. Create an effective method to transfer some form of ownership to your down line so that they can achieve their own unique voice and replicate your success for themselves.
